Programs

What we do

Saturday Gathering

Saturday mornings · in person and online, same session

Time for the body and a moment for the spirit, joined onsite and online at once. Muscle relaxation, patting (self-massage), Tai Chi, and aerobics — a beginner routine during catch-up time, an advanced routine for regulars — alongside a short Bible sharing and a life story. Everyone is welcome, whatever you believe. The sharings go up on our YouTube channel afterwards.

Thursday Tech Fellowship

Thursday afternoons · in person and online

A hands-on fellowship for learning open-source technology and AI, taught by volunteers, with no prior background assumed. It began as training for nonprofit staff who need to keep their own systems running, and it is open to anyone who wants to join — it grows with whoever turns up.

Open-Source IT for Nonprofits

Year-round, by arrangement

We help nonprofits and other small community organizations design, build, and run real systems on open-source technology. Our volunteers give their time to develop a low-cost solution that fits your environment. If a job goes beyond what volunteers can take on, we will refer you to professional help for that part.

Our meeting times shift now and then — email us and we’ll tell you exactly when the next one starts.

Our work

What we’re building now

An online library for our partner seminary

We are building a library catalogue and circulation system on Koha, the open-source library platform, hosted on Microsoft Azure. A small team of volunteers is handling the deployment, the data migration, and the hand-over training — so the seminary’s own staff can run it themselves afterwards.

We build with current tooling rather than dated habits — AI assistants carry much of the configuration, data cleanup, and migration scripting. Working with AI is a valuable skill in its own right, and our volunteers learn it here on real work, the same ground the Thursday fellowship covers. A small team, well equipped, makes a large difference.

About

Who we are

Vital Star Foundation is a California nonprofit public benefit corporation, recognized as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. We help people gain both practical skills and a sense of meaning in life — through secular and Christian faith-based education, weekly gatherings for physical wellness, and hands-on technology work for organizations that serve the public.

The Foundation is operated entirely by volunteers. We run on freely available online platforms and donated meeting space, which keeps our overhead near zero and puts our effort directly into the programs themselves.

Made possible by others’ generosity

A volunteer organisation can only do this much because these programs and tools are given freely or at nonprofit rates. We are grateful to all of them.
